For those new to airsoft sniping, a quality bolt action spring setup can run you into the thousands. I should know as I have built a few and my wallet cried each and every time! Thankfully, the Javelin Gun Works M24 has eased my wallet’s pain and delivers a high quality, skirmish ready, sniper rifle out of the box. I know that sounds like a pitch line, but in all honesty, the M24 shocked me on all fronts during close inspection and field trials. Let me explain…
The first thing I noticed after unboxing was the weight. It’s beefy, clocking in at 5.5 pounds, a very welcome surprise. I was expecting a feather weight much like the VSR clones on the market. The second prominent feature was the length, measuring a 43 inches and with the adjustable stock extended, 46 inches. The textured polymer stock feels a bit hollow but it’s hardly worth mentioning as once you shoulder it, the platform feels extremely ridged and secure.
As with all spring bolt action rifles, the pull on the bolt is stiff but nothing to cry about. Chronoing in the 450fps range on .20g bbs, pulling the spring bolt back isn’t as beastly as a 500+fps rifle, but I can see where your arm would take a beating should you run the M24 as your primary. The magazine holds 15 rounds and while I have heard about issues with feeding, I’ve run at least 5 mags through the M24 without a single jamming issue.
On the field is where the M24 shines. I attached a Mueller 3-12 40mm scope and rings to the provided picatinny rail (another nice integrated feature). During trials, I used Maruzen Grand Master .29g bbs and was hitting man-sized targets at 150 feet consistently. I won’t lie, I wasn’t 10/10, but that could just be my rusty sniping practices.
The only upgrades I would make at this stage of my testing would be adding a tight-bore inner barrel to improve accuracy. The trigger mechanism and sears showed little to no wear, as did the cylinder or bolt. Another bonus is the M24’s compatibility with APS2 parts, making upgrading the internals much more friendly. The APS2 platform has been around for ages and parts are widely available so sourcing said parts will be a breeze.
In conclusion, the market is saturated with budget bolt action rifles. The majority require quite a few upgrades to even make them quasi-field ready but not the Javelin M24. Out of the box, this rifle is a contender and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to break into sniping or simply sniping on a budget.
